Behind the use of psychoactive substances, there is a complex process that leads a person to develop substance use problems. In my experience, it is important to know about the changes and adaptations in the biochemistry of the brain, and the subsequent organic damage in some cases, and also to take in consideration trauma, family dynamics, social and cultural aspects, and even the symbolic implications of the substance, the context and the individual. Group, Community and Society also play an important role in how this phenomena shows up, persist, replicates or it’s overcome.
